gandalf
gandalf the Grey (also known as Mithrandir and Olórin) is a wise wizard who was sent to Middle-Earth around year 1000 in the Third Age, more than 2000 years before the setting of The Lord of the Rings, to help the free peoples fight the evil Sauron, along with Saruman the White (who later abandoned his task) and three other wizards. Gandalf befriended many peoples and became a well-known name all over Middle-Earth. In the year 3018 Gandalf was selected to lead the Fellowship of the Ring. After defeating the evil Balrog of Moria, Gandalf the Grey died and ressurected as Gandalf the White, and continued fighting Sauron. When Sauron was defeated, Gandalf left Middle-Earth and went over the sea, where he had come from.Gandalf was of origin a Maia. Manwe sent him and four other Maia to Middle-Earth to confront the evil in Dol Guldur (which was actually caused by Sauron). The five Maia had their powers reduced and took on the form of aged men. They were to use their knowledge, not their power to fight Sauron. These five Maia, who were called the Istari, or Wizards, arrived in Middle-Earth to rid it of Sauron. However, by the start of the War of the Ring, only Gandalf was still faithfull to his quest. Saruman had in fact gone against the Istari completely. When they arrived, Cirdan the Shipwright recongnized Gandalf as the wisest of them, and gave to him Narya, the Elvish Ring of Fire (one of the three rings they obtained in the 2nd Age).

radagast the brown
a member of the order of wizards specializing in animal lore. Commonly maintains relationships between the wizards and the various animal lords. As one of the five Istari Wizards sent to Middle-Earth by the Valar, Radagast was hand picked by Yavanna, the Valar who created all of the growing things in Middle-Earth, who strongly pressed Curunir (Saruman) to take Radagast as one of the five. Saruman resented his being coerced to include Radagast as one of the Five, as he viewed him as an inferior. This was evident by Saruman's open scorn and criticism throughout the books.Yavanna knew Radagast had a strong love of her creations of nature and wildlife, and that by sending him to Middle-Earth he would be drawn to look to and protect the things he had grown to love while in Aman, and not to fulfill his mission as one of the Istari, which was to stand against Sauron and to inspire Men, Elves, Dwarves and all free people of Middle-Earth for good. While in Middle-Earth, Radagast paid little notice for the doings and actions of the outside world, and would often dissapear into the forests and wilderness for long periods of time. While Radagast failed in his specifically appointed mission as an Istari, he did succeed in fulfilling Yavanna's subterfuge.

thranduil
thranduil was one of the Sindar, or Grey Elves. Although the date and place of his birth are unrecorded, he may have been born in Beleriand, during the First Age of Middle-earth. Following the end of the First Age and the destruction of much of Beleriand during the War of Wrath many Sindar migrated into the east of Middle-earth. Crossing the Misty Mountains, they found populations of Silvan Elves living in the woodlands that bordered the River Anduin. The Sindar were welcomed by these people and some were made princes over them. Among these was Thranduil's father Oropher, whose realm included the southern portions of the forest of Greenwood the Great, which was later known as Mirkwood.

Thranduil was the father of Legolas.

galadriel
Galadriel is a Noldorin princess, the daughter of Finarfin. She was the co-ruler and Lady of Lothlórien along with her husband, Lord Celeborn. Neither she nor Celeborn took royal titles as they saw themselves as guardians of Lothlorien. Galadriel was the only daughter and youngest child of Finarfin, prince of the Ñoldor and of Eärwen, whose cousin was Lúthien. Her elder brothers were Finrod Felagund, Angrod, and Aegnor.

frodo baggins
Frodo Baggins is a Hobbit of the Shire, born on September 22nd in the year 2968 (1368 Shire Reckoning) of the Third Age of Middle-earth (using J.R.R. Tolkien's literary timeline). In 2980, following the deaths of his parents Drogo and Primula Baggins, Frodo is adopted by his older cousin Bilbo and is named as his heir. On September 22nd, 3001, "Uncle" Bilbo gave a huge party to celebrate his 111st birthday and Frodo's 33rd (marking Frodo's coming-of-age as an adult).
Although not well-known inside the Shire, Frodo is legendary elsewhere in Middle Earth for his task in destroying the One Ring of power, and thus destroying the evil lord Sauron in the process. Accompanied by his friend and gardner Samwise Gamgee (along with as many as eight others at several points), Frodo took the long trek from the Shire to Mount Doom in Mordor. During the course of their quest, The Fellowship of The Ring encountered many attacks from external and internal forces, most notably from Gollum, who possessed the One Ring before Bilbo Baggins picked it up and subsequently gave it to Frodo. Although Frodo survived his journey to Mordor, during the trek he was wounded by the sword of the Witch King. The wound never fully healed and left Frodo unable to settle back into his life in the Shire. Because they were both Ring bearers, Frodo and Bilbo were afforded the special honor of sailing west with the elves to the Grey Havens. There, their adventures in Middle Earth ended.

arwen
Arwen was the youngest child of Elrond and Celebrían. Her elder brothers were the twins Elladan and Elrohir. Her name Ar-wen means 'noble maiden'. She bore the sobriquet "Evenstar" (or Evening Star), as the most beautiful of the last generation of High Elves in Middle-earth.
As told in "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen", Aragorn in his twentieth year met Arwen for the first time in Rivendell, where he lived under Elrond's protection. Arwen, then over 2700 years old, had recently returned to her father's home after living for a while with her grandmother Lady Galadriel in Lórien. Aragorn fell in love with Arwen at first sight. Some thirty years later, the two were reunited in Lórien. Arwen reciprocated Aragorn's love, and on the mound of Cerin Amroth they committed themselves to marry each other.
